Island Food Lovers Guide 2010/11

by Alison Jane Reid on September 6, 2010

I have just completed my annual Food Lovers Guide to the Isle of Wight for Red Funnel. There have been a lot of changes – for the better – since last year, with exciting new chefs and an increasing emphasis on seasonal, local, and organic produce. To read it, click here.

And, coming soon: My guide to how to eat your way around the Island, ethically. Nearly all my favourite places have been sought out with friends, or discovered by word-of-mouth recommendation. If you have a favourite organic farm shop or deli, pleae let us know by using the comment section below.

Thanks! – Those are some great places to eat on your Red Funnel guide, and nice that they are not all special occasion places.
Love it if you can find more farm shops etc for us stay-at-home domestic goddess types to read about, especially if you know anywhere that makes good bread outside Bembridge.
I can recommend the cheese counter at Farmer Jacks in Arreton.

Hi Judith,
Glad you enjoyed the article – there’s more to come both on Red Funnel’s website and here on the Ethical-Hedonist.
Kirsty at The Island Deli mentioned that she will be stocking great bread shortly as Kate (formerly of Bembridge bakery) is opening a bakery in St Lawrence; meanwhile The Island Bakers bread is available at The Taverners shop in Godshill, deliveries are usually Wednesday and Saturday and the bread sells FAST!

The Island Deli in Ventnor is now selling bread from the new bakery in St Lawrence, the Undercliff Bakery. Initial response from staff and customers seems positive. I bought a loaf of Chilli Bread made with Ventnor chilies, which is has been a great companion to some of my autumn roast vegetable soups that we’ve been eating this week. I think that I still prefer Island Bakers bread, but I haven’t tried an Undercliff Bakery sourdough yet to make a fair comparison.

Hi AJ.
After recommendations by several friends we visited the Taverners in Godshill for lunch.
After a long walk with our dog, Little Susie, we had a heartwarming meal in this lovely traditional village pub. Home cooked macaroni cheese with a wonderfully fresh side- salad, he went for the steak which I was assured was delicious! We are booking next time for an evening meal with friends – the wine list looks great, can’t wait to try it!

There is some exciting developments on the Isle of Wight food scene. The George is back on form and now Tyler Torrence has moved to The Priory, hopefully that island gem will start to shine again.
