A Visit to Sophie Honeybourne, Ventnor’s Fairy Queen of Jewels

by Alison Jane Reid on June 1, 2011

Exciting, cutting edge jewellery that makes the heart skip isn’t just the preserve of chic emporiums in Shoreditch or Covent Garden.  Sophie Honeybourne, graduate of the Royal College of Art, is one of the most exciting new talents on the jewellery scene, and she has chosen to return to her roots and open her first shop and studio in the  Victorian seaside town where she grew up and loves with a passion – Ventnor.

Venture into her enticing, jewel-box shop and you will discover a designer in love with organic natural forms. Sophie’s dramatic, ethereally pretty necklaces in the ice cream hues of summer are now so sought after that fans make special pilgrimages to the island just to visit the shop and meet  Sophie, who sparkles with elfin charm, just like her twinkling jewels. Her sought after pod collection also includes gossamer rings and bracelets and the inspiration behind them are the walks Sophie used to take with her naughty Highland Terrier, Buddy. ‘ I always thought I wanted to make big, statement pieces of jewellery; then one day, I remember looking at the way berries fall on Old Man’s beard; and then it just clicked that this would work as a great piece of design.’

This beguiling shop, crammed with pretty trinkets and treasures, also stocks Tatty Devine’s delicious, cult, extrovert jewellery, and there are wonderful, affordable gift ideas, such as having a favourite poem or message engraved on a dinky silver bookmark.

Green and glam recycling – We love the idea that you can also take in a treasured, but dated family heirloom and Sophie will lovingly rework it into a stunningly, wearable new piece of jewellery.

This is that rare, one of a kind shop where you can dare to dream. Commission a one off piece of jewellery, a precious engagement ring or a stylish, elegant reminder of your visit to this enchanted isle.

I always get comments on my Honeybourne necklace – lovely lime green enamel goes a treat with the silver. A nod to art nouveau.
